Georgia Bulldogs Clinch SEC East With Win Over Kentucky

ATHENS, Ga. Article Link -- One of Mark Richt’s celebrations was premeditated, and there was no way it could be a disappointment. The other one was spur of the moment, and didn’t go as well. Not that the once-beleaguered Georgia coach cared.

Before Saturday’s 19-10 win over Kentucky, with the SEC East title on the line, Richt told his Georgia football team that if they got him a win, he was going to find his wife, Kathryn, and plant a kiss on her on the field.

Richt followed through with the display of public affection, on the Georgia sideline in front of thousands of cheering fans. It was a heartfelt moment, a culmination of good feelings after so many rough times the past few years.

But riding their stout defense, and doing just enough on offense, proved to be enough to clinch Georgia’s spot in the SEC championship game. The 13th-ranked Bulldogs will face No. 1 LSU, No. 3 Alabama or No. 6 Arkansas.

Georgia (9-2 overall, 7-1 in the SEC) certainly will not be the favorite in that game, and critics will say it is a product of its schedule. But considering where it was last year and the 0-2 start this season, players and coaches didn’t seem to care:

Big SEC Game This Weekend UGA vs Awburn

Big Game Ahead For The Dawgs!

Best video of all time - I can attest to this since I was at the game (attended 5 Barnburners in a row) and loved every minute of this!

The Deep South's Oldest Rivalry is the name given to the college football rivalry between the Auburn University Tigers and the University of Georgia Bulldogs. The two schools first played each other on February 20, 1892 at Piedmont Park in Atlanta, Georgia, with Auburn winning 10-0. The teams have played each other almost every year since 1898, with only World War I and World War II preventing games from being played.

Through the 2010 season, the rivalry is tied for the seventh most played college football series at 114 games and is known as being quite even, with Auburn holding a 54-52-8 lead. To further exemplify the equality of the rivals, Georgia leads the cumulative score by thirty-eight points: 1,809-1,771, or a per-game average of 15.86-15.53. When the Southeastern Conference split into Eastern and Western divisions with Auburn in the West and Georgia in the East, the game was designated as the two teams' permanent inter-divisional match-up as an historic rivalry. Though the two teams have been among the league's most successful since 2000, they have yet to meet in a re-match in the SEC Championship Game. A first such meeting would cause this rivalry to be tied with the South's Oldest Rivalry in number of games played, and a second such meeting would cause this rivalry to surpass the South's Oldest Rivalry in terms of games played (though not in continuity).

Georgia Bulldogs Beat The Florida Gators 24-20 and Earn 6th In a Row!

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Georgia coach Mark Richt took several steps toward midfield with his son draped around his neck. His players and assistant coaches were in the background, celebrating in the same end zone that caused such a stir during the Bulldogs' last win against Florida.

Richt may have saved his job with two gutsy, fourth-down calls that resulted in touchdowns, and No. 22 Georgia overcame several mistakes to beat Southeastern Conference rival Florida 24-20 Saturday.

"I know it was just a ballgame, but it seemed like a lot more than that," Richt said. "Just to see our players and fans celebrate, in this place especially, was awesome."

Georgia kept pace with South Carolina in the Eastern Division, and maybe more important, the Bulldogs picked up their fourth win in 22 tries against Florida. This one was huge for Richt, who had been under pressure since losing to Boise State and the Gamecocks to open the season.
